Avena Foods – Glyphosate Statement.
Oats and glyphosate has been a hot topic in the news this week.
At Avena Foods, our conventional gluten-free and organic gluten-free Purity Protocol oats are protected against sources of contamination, including glyphosate, right from the seed selection, and throughout our on farm practices. ‘Start safe, stay safe.’
The Avena Purity Protocol includes several control measures that monitor the use of glyphosate. Specific control measures of our program as it relates to glyphosate include:
1. ON-SITE FIELD INSPECTIONS AND FARM VISITS
Annual field inspections conducted by 3rd party CFIA trained inspectors.
2. GROWER CONTRACTS
Our contracts state the use of pre-harvest glyphosate is prohibited. Contracts are signed for each crop year, annually.
3. LETTER OF GLYPHOSATE BAN
Avena continues to hold a strong stance regarding glyphosate. Since 2015, we have banned the use of pre-harvest glyphosate and thoroughly communicate to our growers prior to contracting.
4. ANNUAL GROWERS SCHOOL
Our 2017/18 training sessions included discussions and awareness around glyphosate contamination and studies of its impact on human health. This is mandatory attendance for all our new growers.
5. CHEMICAL DECLARATION FORMS
Declaration form is signed by each grower annually for each crop year and field and a signature is required in section for pre-harvest glyphosate ban agreement.
6. TESTING AND MONITORING
We have reserved the right to conduct random testing on glyphosate on post-harvest samples from each grower. Frequency of monitoring is based on risk and assessed at a minimum each year. Since our 2015 ban, test results have shown there were no residue present in our raw grain samples. We will continue to monitor random harvest samples for 2018 crop year as soon as they are available.
